Virtual reality systems allow a participant to experience, navigate through,
and manipulate a hypothetical area filled with imaginary structures and objects.
This area is often referred to as "cyberspace," a term first used by author
William Gibson in his 1984 novel, Neuromancer. By the end of the twentieth
century, virtual reality not only encapsulated a specific technology,
but also signaled a broader set of cultural questions about the place
of technology in modern life.
